D.C.’s 2014 roster features 18 returning players and several exciting additions including last season’s top goal scorer Peter Prial.

After four tryout sessions spread over successive weekends, the D.C. Current are proud to announce that they have finalized their roster heading into the 2014 campaign.

The 29-man squad features many familiar faces along with several exciting new additions to the team, none more so than the league’s top goal scorer from last season Peter Prial (Middlebury College/Cambridge, Mass.).

“Peter is obviously the biggest name we added to our roster, and his stats and character back that up,” said General Manager Matt Dewhurst. “But there are a lot of guys that we are excited about adding to the team. We have 10 rookies that we can’t wait to see add some energy and attitude to our team.”

In addition to Prial, the 2014 version of the Current will feature a team that is filled with their top seven scorers from last season. Markham Shofner (Pomona College/Nashville, Tenn.) led the Current with 50 points, fifth best in the league, last season recording 17 goals and 33 assists, third most in the MLU. Alan Kolick (College of William & Mary/Arlington, Va.) came in just behind his teammate with 47 points, ranking seventh best in the MLU, catching 13 goals and tossing 34 assists, second most in the league. Calvin Oung (Brown University/Baltimore, Md.) will also return to the D.C. squad for a second season after a top-ten finish in points with 21 goals and 22 assists.

“The fact that we have all played together and that our core has remained intact should give us a definite boost,” Kolick said. “Every season offers a fresh start and I think our team has some new additions that will really make a huge impact with the team both physically and psychologically.”

In all the Current will have 18 players making a return to their roster along with the additions of Prial and 10 rookie members. Second year players like Delrico Johnson (Towson University/Brooklyn Park, Md.) and Tom Doi (Green Mountain College/Bethesda, Md.) will look to show the way for the future stars of the Current, including handler Cody Johnston (College of William & Mary/Arlington, Va.).

“I am extremely excited for this season,” Doi said. “We learned so much last year but never really reached our full potential. Now that the team is set, it will be great to get practicing and to pickup right where we left off last year.”

Between now and season opener in April, Johnston and the other rookies will have to adjust to the speed, intensity and overall high level of play in the MLU, but assistant coach Will Smolinski believes the new kids on the block, as well as the experienced players, will be ready after watching them compete during the preseason combine workouts.

“We are not going to be outworked. The commitment that it takes to make those 5 a.m. practices should not be overlooked,” Smolinski said. “All of our guys have bought in to what we are trying to do. We’re going to go out and execute our offense and defense for the full ten-game season and then make it into the playoffs and to the championship game.”

After falling in the Eastern Conference finals last year to Boston, D.C. has set their sights firmly on this year’s championship game, and anything short of that will be a disappointment. The Current will kick off their campaign with a road trip to face the Philadelphia Spinners on April 12, before opening the home portion of their schedule the following week at Cardinal Stadium against the defending league champion outfit of the Boston Whitecaps.

“Our goals haven’t changed from last season. We want to be the best. Championship or bust,” Oung said. “Other MLU Eastern Conference teams have gotten stronger in the offseason adding big name athletes left and right, so we know the bar has been set higher. However, if we can keep the focus on our team, our teammates and our game, we have a great shot at hoisting the MLU trophy come July.”
