D.C.’s biggest game in franchise history is here. The Current travel to Philadelphia to take on the Vancouver Nighthawks in the 2014 MLU Championship.

D.C. Current (10-1) vs Vancouver Nighthawks (7-4)

PPL Park, Chester, Pennsylvania | July 19, 2014 at 6:30 p.m.

Getting There

Major League Ultimate and PPL Park are offering transportation options to make sure that getting to the stadium is as easy as possible for fans. There will be a free shuttle from the Chester Transportation Center to PPL Park, and parking at the stadium will be free for the day.

Kelly’s Irish Times

Located in Northwest D.C., Kelly’s Irish Times is the official pub of the 2014 Current. The Times will be hosting a watch party for the big game, offering fans who can’t make it to the championship a chance to cheer on the Current together while enjoying awesome food and drink specials.

Keys to the Game

The Nighthawks and Current have never met on the MLU field before, but the first clash between the two squads will decide the 2014 league champion. The Nighthawks have this season’s scoring leader in Brendan Wong, who scored 64 points on 48 goals and 16 assists, but the Current’s defense was the best unit at scoring break points in the MLU. Vancouver will feature Western Conference Defensive Player of the Year Morgan Hibbert, but D.C. will counter with their high-scoring offense led by Markham Shofner (41 points: 11 goals, 30 assists) and Peter Prial (39 points: 23 goals, 16 assists). D.C. will be without Eastern Conference MVP Alan Kolick who broke his non-throwing wrist last week, but the Current have proven they can win this season even when they are missing some of their best players.

There are countless storylines heading into this championship match and it should be a fantastic showcase of everything the MLU has to offer.

Players to Watch

Markham Shofner: Shofner finished tied for the league lead in assists with 30 and is a threat to put the disc deep from any point on the field. If Shofner has a throwing window he will look to exploit the Nighthawks defense with deep shots on Saturday.

Peter Prial: Prial has never lost a game in MLU play and will look to become the only player in the league to have won two championships, after winning the title while playing for the Boston Whitecaps last season. Prial is a fantastic cutter who always seems to be open, but he might have a tough time finding space if the Nighthawks match him up with Morgan Hibbert.

Morgan Hibbert: Hibbert recorded 20 defenses this season. By himself. The tall, lanky and deceptively fast Hibbet seems to gobble up every deep disc that opposing teams throw into his air space. Hibbert will have his work cut out for him though as D.C. has several handlers who have pinpoint accuracy with the frisbee.
