D.C. announced today that they have re-signed offensive cutter Peter Prial for the upcoming 2015 season.
Prial, who is entering his third season in the league, helped lead the Current to their first MLU Championship in 2014. After coming over from the Boston Whitecaps a season before, Prial was a key standout in D.C.’s offense, scoring a total of 43 points on 26 goals and 17 assists.
“I’m obviously excited to be on the team again this year and am really looking forward to working with Keven, Will and the rest of the guys in an effort to bring the championship back to D.C.,” said Prial.
Prial joins a large group of key players already signed from last season’s championship team, solidifying the Current as the most difficult match-up in the East. Prial was also voted by his fellow players the 2015 Eastern Conference Spirit Award for his exemplary sportsmanship on and off the field throughout the season.
“Peter has proven that if you make him cut under he can still be a threat with the disc,” said Current assistant coach Will Smolinski. “He is fast enough that as soon as Markham [Shofner] or Calvin [Oung] has the disc, you need to stay in position to cover the deep.”
Prial will enter his third season as the only player in Major League Ultimate to have won both MLU Championships. He also remains the only undefeated player in the league (Prial did not play in the Current’s Week 3 loss to Boston last season).
“In Boston, winning the inaugural MLU Championship with a bunch of guys I had been playing with for five years was amazing,” said Prial. “Last season in D.C., I felt right at home with all the guys, and it was great to see the team grow throughout the course of the season.”
In 2013 Prial was a major factor in the Boston Whitecaps’ undefeated championship season. He led Major League Ultimate with 35 goals and earned the third highest point total in the league with 55. Prial originally signed with the Current in 2014 after moving to Washington D.C. in order to attend law school at Georgetown University.
The re-signing of Prial now brings the total of Current players to 15. Roster spots still remain and will be filled at the team’s open tryouts on February 8 and 15 at Total Soccer Arena in Landover.
